At least 58 inmates, who escaped from Narsingdi Central Jail during the violence over quota protests on Friday, were arrested by police, said Inspector General of Prisons Brigadier General Anisul Haque, reports UNB.

"So far, 58 inmates out of the 826 who escaped have been arrested and produced before the court, and 15 out of 85 looted arms have been recovered," he said while talking to reporters after visiting the jail.

Terming the incident as "unprecedented", the IG of prisons said police are trying to recover the looted arms and ammunition and arrest the rest of the inmates who escaped.

Earlier on Saturday, Jailer Quamrul Islam said a total of 85 arms and 8015 ammunitions including 7000 bullets were looted from the Narsingdi Central Jail during Friday's attack when 826 prisoners escape from the jail.

There were a total of 104 prison guards including jail superintendent, jailer and deputy jailer.

Among them one was on leave while the others were on duty, he said.

During the attack, six people including a prison guard were injured, he added.

The jail has seven prison wards and nine cells.

A group of people took position in front of the Narsingdi Central Jail gate during the protests on Friday, said Quamrul Islam.

At one stage, they set a fire at 04:00 pm and broke the jail. Later, they took the prison guards hostage and broke open the locks of the cells and prison wards, making way for the prisoners to flee.

Notorious convicts were among the escaped prisoners, he said.
