679 killed, 934 injured: RSF

Road accidents killed at least 679 people and injured 934 others across the country in April this year, causing a loss of Tk 21.19-billion human resources, the Road Safety Foundation (RSF) said in a report on Sunday.

Of the deceased, 93 were women and 108 children, it reads.

As many as 259 people died in 316 motorcycle accidents, which is 38.14 per cent of the total deaths. Motorcycle accident rate is 47 per cent, the report says.

It further said 113 pedestrians were killed in the accidents, which is 16.64 per cent of the total fatalities.

"Ninety-six vehicle drivers and their assistants were among the deceased," it reads.

During this period, nine people were killed and 68 others injured in seven boat accidents. And, 45 people were killed and 24 others injured in 38 railway accidents.

The RSF prepared the report based on nine national dailies, seven online news portals, various electronic media and its own sources.

Of the total dead, 27 people were killed and 66 others injured in 46 road accidents in capital Dhaka.

Last March in 2024, road accidents claimed lives of at least 573 people. On average, 18.48 people were killed a day which increased to average 22.63 people in April.

Accordingly, the death toll increased by 22.45 per cent in April. Major causes of road accidents are movement of unfit vehicles, reckless driving, incompetence and physical and mental illness of drivers, poor traffic management and extortion in the public transport sector.

The financial loss of human resources in the April Road accidents is about Tk 21.19 billion.

The calculation is done according to the IRAP (International Road Assessment Programme) method, the report says.
