810 suspected muggers arrested in city

A total of 810 suspected muggers were arrested in the last three months in Dhaka City.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 98 muggers in October, 148 in November and 564 in December from different parts of the capital.

This year till January 11, law enforcers also nabbed 374 suspected muggers, Joint Commissioner of Detective Branch (DB-South) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Mohammad Nasirul Islam disclosed these figures to the media at a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre in the capital on Sunday.

Responding to a query about the growing number of incedents like mugging in the city he said, "We have set up several police check posts, including DB, to prevent mugging. Apart from our increased police patrolling, we have also strengthened our detective surveillance to help check mugging incidents."

"Our drive against mugging is going on after examining criminal databases of different circles of muggers," he added.

"Once the muggers are nabbed and held in jail, the number will automatically reduce and thus city dwellers will get relief," he also said.

However, DB police have arrested three burglars in connection with their alleged involvement in the theft of gold from a jewellry shop in Dhanmondi's Shimanto Shambhar market in the capital.

The arrests were made during raids in different parts of Cumilla from Thursday to Saturday, Mr Nasirul said.

Based on the information provided by arrestees, police also recovered 50 bhoris of stolen gold from a jewellery shop in Cumilla.
