ABM Musa was an uncompromising columnist

Observe speakers reminiscing the venerable journalist

ABM Musa was really a genuine media personality who had never compromised his principles in column writings, observed speakers at a discussion in the city on Wednesday, marking the 89th birthday of the late venerable journalist.

"He was outspoken in his criticism. He was a committed believer of objective journalism who penned columns boldly. We have many things to learn from his columns," said eminent columnist Syed Abul Maksud at the memorial discussion organised by ABM Musa-Setara Musa Foundation at the National Press Club.

Violation of human rights is now commonplace in the context of Bangladesh, Abul Maksud added.

"Late Musa bhai was always a vocal defender of people's human and democratic rights. He used to maintain good and cordial relations with all, which made him appear to be amiably a very rare one, compared to other contemporary journalists," he said.

"The late journalist had fought for democracy and human rights throughout his life," he added.

Prof Asif Nazrul of Dhaka University (DU) in his commemorative speech said he was held in deep affection by late ABM Musa.

"He (Musa) gave me (Nazrul) many suggestions that were valuable," he said.

He laid emphasis on ensuring human rights through objective and true journalism as well.

He said none has the rights to kill person by lynching.

He questioned which law in the country has given the right to kill persons who might be followers of Shibir or other organisations or even drug traders.

"If he commits a crime then put him on trial but you've no right to kill him without letting him go through a trial," he said.

He called upon the journalists to be untied since the unity would help them a lot to reach their goals.

Prominent photographer and Ekushey award recipient Sayeeda Khanam was given life time honour for his contribution in the field of journalism.

Prof Rubayet Ferdous of DU moderated the discussion and Barrister Aftab Uddin delivered vote of thanks.
