KERANIGANJ, May 13 (UNB): Academic activities of Jagannath University came to a halt Thursday as general students staged demonstration demanding cancellation of the clause 27 (4) of Jagannath University Act-2005.
Students of 28 departments of the university brought out separate processions at about 9.00am and later burned the effigy of former Education Minister Dr Osman Faruk on Shahid Minar premises.
The students also boycotted classes and examinations to press home their demand.
According to the Act enacted during the tenure of four-party alliance government, the university will be run on its own funding from 2011.
The agitating students said as part of the Act, the government grants were gradually being reduced, forcing the university authorities to increase the tuition fees for enhancing the income of the university.
