ACC clamps down on polluters, extractors

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) conducted on Tuesday two separate drives in Mymensingh and Lalmonirhat districts against environmental pollution and illegal stone and sand extraction.
It received a complaint that in Bhaluka sub-district of Mymensingh, 'Experience Textile and Dyeing Mills' releases untreated toxic waste to arable land.
ACC director general Muhammad Munir Chowdhury said Boro cultivation within the three-four kilometre radius of the dyeing factory got damaged, thus incurring huge losses to hundreds of farmers.
Following an instruction from the commission, a team comprising environment department, local administration and police raided only to find an imperative effluent treatment plant of the factory.
The authorities concerned would take action against the company soon, said the ACC official. Meanwhile, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer Samiul Amin-led team stopped illegal extraction of stone and sand in different areas of Hatibandha sub-district in Lalmonirhat.
