ACC gathering info on wealth of Nur, 3 ex-RAB officials

FE Report | May 22, 2014 00:00:00

The Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) has started collecting information to initiate a probe into the alleged illegal wealth of Nur Hossain, the main accused in the Narayanganj seven murders, and three sacked Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) officials.

"We are collecting information and related documents about Nur Hossain and the former RAB members. After finding sufficient evidence, we will launch a probe against them," ACC secretary M Faizur Rahman Chowdhury said at the monthly press briefing at the Commission's headquarters in the city Wednesday.

The former Rab officials are: Lt Colonel Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Major Arif Hossain and Lt Commander SM Masud Rana.

"We would investigate the RAB officers' source of income and their alleged money laundering," the ACC official said.

On May 6, the three Rab officials were sent into forced retirement after Nazrul's father-in-law Shahidul Islam alleged that some officials of Rab-11 had killed Nazrul and others in exchange for Tk 60 million from ward councillor Nur Hossain and his accomplices.

The RAB officials were arrested on May 17 and 18 last.

Narayanganj City Corporation panel mayor Nazrul Islam and four of his associates and lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarkar and his driver were found dead. Their bodies were recovered from the River Sitalakhya on April 30 and May 1.

Meanwhile, the ACC has decided not to continue its ongoing probe into the non-funded part of the much-talked-about Sonali Bank Limited (SBL) loan scam to facilitate the bank's collection of loans, the ACC secretary said.

"SBL and Bangladesh Bank will conduct probes and the bank will file any case if needed. We will investigate it if the bank fails to continue probe," he said.

Hall-Mark Group swindled a total of Taka 35.47 billion from the SBL- both funded and non-funded ones, ACC probe found.

The ACC secretary said the Commission received a total of 878 corruption allegations and took 113 allegations into cognizance last month (April). The ACC endorsed filing of 12 cases.
