The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Wednesday arrested an official of the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) red-handed along with bribe money in Jessore.
The DNC Deputy Director (DD), Md Nazmul Kabir, was caught in possession of Tk200,000 bribe money from DNC's Jessore district office around 3:30pm by a nine-member ACC team, led by its Dhaka Divisional Office director Nasim Anwar, said ACC public relations officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharjee.
The anti-graft body filed a case in this connection with Jessore Kotwali Model Police Station on the day.
According to the case statement, Sheikh Mahabbat Ali, a licenced liquor store owner in Jhikargachha Upazila of Jessore, had applied for renewal of his licence for 2017-18 at the DNC Jessore district office on July 29, 2017.
But, Mr Kabir demanded Tk 300,000 which was later fixed at Tk 200,000 from Mr Ali for the licence renewal and threatened to delay the process if the money is not paid.
However, following government procedure to renew the liquor selling licence, Ali had already paid yearly renewal fee of Tk 8,000 and value added tax (VAT) of Tk 1,200 to the Sonali Bank corporate branch, Jessore. Acting on the compliant, the ACC formed a team and arrested the DNC official red-handed laying a trap.
