FE Report | February 06, 2019 00:00:00

The committee, formed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to probe into the matter of Jaha Alam, will submit its report to the commission within 20 working days, according to an ACC office order.

The office order, signed by the ACC secretary Dr Md Shamsul Arefin, was issued on Tuesday.

ACC's legal wing Director Abu Hasnat Md Abdul Wadud was made the head of the committee following an instruction from ACC chairman Iqbal Mahmood on Monday.

Jaha Alam, a jute mill worker from Tangail, was imprisoned for three years as an accused in loan forgery cases filed by the commission though he was not connected with the misappropriation.

The person, who has been in jail since February 2016, was released from Kashimpur Central Jail-2 in Gazipur at around 1:00 a.m on Tuesday.

Mr Alam was in jail instead of the real accused namely Abu Salek whose name was in 26 corruption cases out of total 33 filed by the ACC in 2012 for embezzling Tk 180 million taken as loans from Sonali Bank Limited (SBL).

The probe committee was asked to find out who were responsible and for what reason Jaha Alam was chargesheeted and imprisoned instead of real accused Abu Salek.

The committee was also asked to reveal -- the background of accusing Jaha Alam instead of Abu Salek, procedural faults in the investigation of 33 cases, relation of bank officials or other individuals in the incident, and delay to free Jaha Alam even after knowing his innocence.

During the investigation of the incident, the committee would be able to interrogate or seek assistance from any individual of any position, the office order added.

Meanwhile, ACC Commissioner (investigation) AFM Aminul Islam told journalists that the commission will take stern action against the people, whether ACC officials or others, responsible for such incident.

He also said, "The matter wouldn't come that far if there were no faults in the investigations. There is nothing to deny in this regard."
