CHATTOGRAM, Feb 21: A team of the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) on Thursday conducted an operation at the Chattogram Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (CWASA) office and quizzed officials about allegations of irregularities in a sewerage project.
A four-member team led by Assistant Director of ACC's Chattogram Integrated Office-1 Sayed Mohammad Imran conducted the raid and interrogated the CWASA secretary as well as the director of the Tk 38.08 billion ongoing project.
Talking to journalists after the drive, ACC officials said they visited the CWASA office after inspecting the project site and talked to the project director as part of the probe into the allegations of irregularities in a treatment plant at Halishahar.
Imran said the newly-built plant has developed cracks, which is believed to be the result of using low-quality materials.
"We have found many cracks during the inspection this morning and then talked to the officials concerned, including the secretary and the project director, as part of our investigation. The director admitted he knows about the cracks," he said.
"The project director said they had discussed the matter with the consulting firm and the chemicals to be used to seal the cracks have been sent for testing."
Of the 10 mega projects undertaken by CWASA during the term of its former managing director AKM Fazlullah, two are still going on. More than Tk 82.57 billion has been spent on the eight completed projects. The two others are being implemented at a cost of Tk 58.02 billion.
