ACC raids DWASA Fakirapool office over graft charges

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Sunday conducted a drive at Fakirapool zonal office of Dhaka Water Supply & Sewerage Authority (DWASA) over alleged graft and irregularities.
The commission received allegations of bill manipulation, making illegal bills in exchange of money and harassing customers through Hotline-106.
Based on the allegations, an ACC team led by its assistant director Masudur Rahman conducted the drive, according to an ACC press statement.
During the drive, three WASA inspectors-- Golam Rabbani, Shah Miran Bhuiyan and Shafiqul Islam-- were transferred instantly on charge of their link to graft incidents.
The ACC team, consulting with some of the customers, revealed that Shafiqul Islam trims down utility bills of the clients in exchange of bribes.
Besides, the commission found proof of the allegations of preparing bills without checking metres against inspector Golam Rabbani.
Meanwhile, inspector Mr Bhuiyan threatened customers of increasing their bills if bribes are not paid.
In presence of the ACC team, WASA has opened a registrar to settle the complaints of the customers and ensure better management of the service provider.
The commission also found many pending bills that the WASA office hasn't taken any initiative to collect.
Among the pending bills, Moghbazar based Ad-din Hospital owes around Tk 49 million while Bangladesh Police Cooperative Society Tk 3.3 million.
