ACC raids VNS, Rajshahi DoE office over graft

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Thursday conducted two separate drives at Viqarunnisa Noon School (VNS) and Rajshahi divisional office of the Department of Environment (DoE) over graft allegations.
The commission received a complaint on its hotline-106 that the VNS authorities were admitting students in class one in exchange of higher fee going beyond the formal process of admission.
After that an ACC enforcement team went to the main campus of the school in the city's Bailey Road and conducted the drive from 10am to 12:30pm.
During the drive, the ACC team scrutinised admission record of class one of the school and asked VNS acting principal Hasina Begum not to allow corruption centring admission.
Coordinator of the enforcement unit, ACC director general (admin) Muhammad Munir Chowdhury, said the anti-graft authority was on alert against any sort of irregularities in the admission process of schools.
Meanwhile, another ACC team raided Rajshahi divisional office of the Department of Environment in Bogura over allegation of taking bribe for issuing and renewing environmental clearance certificate.
During the drive, the national anti-graft body revealed that 1,144 brick kilns out of the total 2,000 under Rajshahi divisional office of the department are unauthorised.
Besides, ACC found only nine officials and employees present at the department out of the total 20.
Talking about the drive, Mr Chowdhury said, "Corruption in issuing environmental clearance certificate is destroying governance in environment management in the country."
The commission will send a report to the higher authorities soon to take action against the responsible officials.
