ACC starts probe into graft charge against ex-VC of BSMRSTU

Three doctors of FMCH grilled

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Wednesday launched an investigationinto graft allegations against former vice chancellor (VC) of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) Professor Khondoker Nasiruddin.

The commission has appointed its director Sheikh Mohammad Fanafillah to probe the allegations in this regard, according to ACC sources.

On September 30, the BSMRSTU VC resigned from his post a day after University Grants Commission (UGC) probe body found evidence of irregularities and corruption against him.

Besides, the students of the university, situated in Gopalganj, had been protesting since September 18 for the VC's removal as he was allegedly involved in embezzlement and illegal wealth accumulation.

Following Mr Nasiruddin's resignation, Chairman of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering department M Shahjahan has been appointed as the acting VC of BSMRSTU.

Meanwhile on the day, the commission also interrogated three persons including a senior consultant of Faridpur Medical College Hospital (FMCH) over allegation of graft in equipment procurement in between 2012 and 2016.

The ACC director Kazi Shafiqul Alam interrogated senior consultant of FMCH Dr Sheikh Abdul, and two doctors Dr Mizanur Rahman and Dr Enamul Karim for around three hours starting from 10:00 am at the commission headquarters in the city's Segunbagicha.

The Directorate General of Health Service (DGHS) found irregularities in purchase by the hospital as the equipment supplier Messrs Anik Traders submitted a bill of Tk 526.671 million(Tk 5266 71,202 )to the directorate while actual price of the products was Tk 115,300,465(Tk115.3million)
