The Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) summoned on Wednesday five top officials of five financial institutions (FIs) in connection with the alleged swindling of nearly Tk 13 billion (1300 crore) by Ananda Shipyard.
"I have already sent notices asking them to be present at the Commission's head office on February 17-18," ACC deputy director and inquiry officer Zainul Abedin Shebly told the FE.
The ACC will grill managing director of Fareast Finance & Development Limited Shantono Saha, vice president of National Housing Finance & Investment Limited Kamal Pasha and control and compliance head of IDLC Finance Limited Mushtaq Ahmed on February 17.
On February 18 the ACC will question managing director of Bangladesh Industrial Finance Company Limited Enamur Rahman and deputy managing director of Premier Leasing & Finance Limited Maskur Ahmed.
In April 2014 the ACC launched a probe into the allegation of swindling nearly Tk 13 billion from 14 commercial banks and financial institutions by Ananda Shipyard, a manufacturer and exporter of ships.
According to the allegation, Ananda Shipyard took loans worth Tk 13 billion showing fake documents. The banks disbursed the loans violating banking rules, as Ananda Shipyard had no experience of building ships.
The Bangladesh Bank in its inspections also found such irregularities in disbursing loans by the banks and financial institutions.
