NBR chief Muhammad Abdul Mazid said Wednesday the revenue watchdog has launched a countrywide programme to motivate the people for payment of tax.
Taxpayers from different commercial establishments participated in the programme voluntarily.
Mazid said: "If we could increase internal revenue to 90 per cent of the national budget from existing 75 per cent, the country's dependence on foreign assistance will be reduced".
NBR tax members Ahmed Ali, Khorshed Alam, Bangladesh Dokan Malik Samity Chairman Amir Hossain Khan and secretary general SA Kader Kiron, and AC Nath of Basu, Nath and Chatarjee, a chartered accountancy and tax consultancy firm attended the programme.
Association leaders have requested the NBR chief to stop harassment of taxmen to ensure taxpayer friendly environment.
Amir Hossain Khan urged the board to take action against big tax evaders rather than the marginal taxpayers.
SA Kader said: "The taxmen should communicate with the taxpayers with a positive attitude, without creating any panic."
Minimum tax slab should be reduced to Tk 1000 from Tk 1500 for the shop owners in district towns, he said.
