Actor Soumitra turns 81 today

Soumitra Chatterjee, one of the great film actors in India, turns 81 today (Monday).

The acclaimed actor was born in Krishnanagar, a town in Nadia district of West Bengal, but his ancestral home is at Koya village, eight kilometres from Shilaidah in Kushtia district.  

Soumitra made his professional stage debut in the film "Apur Sangsar" directed by great Satyajit Ray in 1959. The film touched the hearts of millions of people. He was honoured with many awards, including Dada Saheb Phalke award, India's highest cinematic recognition, and Padma Bhushan award, for his outstanding performance in the films.

As a symbol of rich tribute to Soumitra Chatterjee marking his birth anniversary, Masud Karim of Bangladesh has made a documentary film on his life titled 'Krishnakali', says a press release.
