The Appellate Division (AD) of the Supreme Court stayed Wednesday effectiveness of an order passed by High Court (HC) on installing demarcation pillars on river Turag in Mohammadpur area of the capital, reports BSS.
The four-member AD panel led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order. According to a lawyer involved in the case, as a result of the order, the demarcation pillars installed in the river will remain there.
Allowing a writ petition filed by a real estate company, the HC on February 22 issued a status quo on installing demarcation pillar on Turag. Rights group Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) filed a petition with the court of Appellate Division Chamber Judge against the HC order.
The Chamber Judge court halted the HC order for three weeks and forwarded the matter to a regular bench for hearing. After hearing, the AD-bench disposed of the matter.
"The Appellate Division has disposed of the leave to appeal by staying the High Court's status quo. Now it means that the pillars on river Turag will remain," said lawyer Manzill Murshid.
