The Asian Development Bank (ADB) would provide $116 million in loans to develop the Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) area as a green and environment-friendly one, officials said on Tuesday.
The fund would be utilised to develop infrastructure for the city considering the environment, they said.
"We completed negotiations with the ADB last week. The lender agreed to provide the fund," said an Economic Relations Division (ERD) official.
"Now we are preparing to sign the deal. After the law ministry's vetting, we will go for the deal."
The fund will be used under the Narayanganj Green and Resilient Urban Development Project (NGRUDP).
The infrastructure includes improving water supply and drainage, enhancing urban mobility by building a riverside road, and building capacity to manage urban services more sustainably and resiliently.
The ADB will lend $115.84 million for the project, which has an estimated cost of $138.93 million.
Narayanganj is the fourth most populated city in Bangladesh and economically important because it is adjacent to Dhaka.
Better capacity and quality of infrastructure in the NCC area is necessary to keep pace with the economic development needs, ranging from reliable piped water supply to drainage systems and public spaces.
Another ERD official said the ADB's fund would help improve urban facilities in the city.
Under the project, the existing drainage systems would be upgraded, including renovating 19.923 kilometres, cleaning 170.381 kilometres, and constructing 10.78 kilometres of drains, Local Government Division officials said.
Besides, 13.96 kilometres of canals would be rehabilitated.
