Afghan team meets UGC chief, discusses higher edn project

A delegation from Afghanistan called on University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan on Tuesday in the city and discussed with him a proposed project on higher education.
World Bank and the governments of Bangladesh and Afghanistan will finance the five-year long Higher Education Acceleration and Transformation (HEAT) Project.
The first-ever regional project is aimed at improving the conditions of the national and regional bodies involved in higher education and research.
UGC will be the implementing agency of the project once finalised.
The proposed project will upgrade tertiary education, boost connectivity and create women leadership in a number of Southeast Asian countries, said the UGC chief.
'It will create a common platform for higher education and research in South Asia and encourage innovations in social science, science and technology,' he hoped.
Chancellor of Kabul University Prof Hamidullah Farooqui said, "It's a major challenge for the country to upgrade their higher education. Besides, the project will enhance capacity for the technical education."
Under HEAT Project, joint research activities will be done, programmes will be exchanged and skill training will also be provided for the member countries.
