Allow shops to remain open until 10:00pm

Shop Owners Association urges govt

The Bangladesh Shop Owners Association has called upon the government to allow shops to remain open from 12:00pm to 10:00pm to help boost trading and support businesses facing mounting costs.

On Monday, Association President Nazmul Hasan Mahmud said they had sent a letter to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman requesting permission for shops to operate until 10:00pm.

"We are making this appeal in the interest of millions of consumers across the country and nearly 7 million (70 lakh) shop owners, employees, and their families whose livelihoods depend on this sector," said the letter.

It said that retail trade is an important sector of the national economy and noted that millions of jobs have been created through shops, markets, and shopping malls across cities, towns, and rural areas.

Association leaders said at present, rising business costs, including shop rent, electricity bills, bank loan instalments, salaries, and other expenses, have put traders under severe pressure.

The letter said that the current restriction requiring shops to close after 7 pm is negatively affecting retail businesses.

It further said many customers are unable to shop during the day because of work commitments and prefer to visit stores in the evening.

According to the association, limiting business hours reduces sales opportunities, lowers income, threatens jobs and hampers overall economic activity.

The association urged the government to consider allowing all shops, shopping malls, markets, and business establishments to remain open from 12:00 noon (or any time deemed appropriate by the government) until 10:00pm to keep the country's economy active and vibrant.
