A.Z.M. Anas, economic editor at The Financial Express, has been named a gold prize winner of the Prince Albert II and UNCA Awards for coverage of climate change, the first such an honour by a Bangladeshi journalist.
He is also the second South Asian newsman to be a gold winner, after Somini Sengupta, a West Bengal-origin climate reporter for the New York Times.
The United Nations Correspondents Association, or UNCA, will award the winners of its 2019 awards for best print, broadcast and online media coverage of the United Nations, UN agencies and field operations on December 06 in New York, the UNCA posted on its website.
A total of 10 journalists were awarded in three categories representing such media organisations as Bloomberg, Al Jazeera, PBS, etc.
Anas wrote "an eye-opening series of articles on the grave environmental challenges in his native Bangladesh," which sits on a massive river delta and is especially vulnerable to climate change, according to the jury board.
His articles "document alarming erosion and landslides contributing to economic dislocation and uncontrolled migration," the panel of juries said.
