Annual conference on kidney begins in city

Kidney specialists and nephrologists suggested public-private partnership and health insurance to ensure proper kidney treatment for millions of patients in the country.

Of about 20 million kidney patients, 40,000 die every year. Therefore, they suggested a strong healthcare system apart from preventive measures.

Specialists said this at the two-day 19th Annual Convention and Scientific Seminar on Saturday at Dhaka Club.

The event is being organized by Kidney Foundation, Bangladesh, in collaboration with Royal London Hospital, UK, and as Sister Renal Centre (SIRC) programme of International Society of Nephrology (ISN).

National Prof A. K. Azad Khan, President of Bangladesh Diabetic Association and Chairman, University of Science and Technology, Dhaka spoke at the event as the chief guest. "We have to be aware of the way healthcare is moving throughout the world. Healthcare has become completely digitized. So, our tertiary healthcare must ensure global standards," he said.

"We need to concentrate on preventing kidney disease. Medical community thinks that they advise people and it will work on them but this is not incorrect like we all know smoking is harmful but still people have it," he added.

Calling the tobacco companies the future enemy of the human race, he stressed on the prevention of the disease.
