Annual financial loss due to deaths amounts to Tk 150b

Loss of lives in road crashes is taking a heavy toll on economic growth in the country, speakers at a programme held in the city said Saturday.

They were speaking at the event arranged by Trauma Center Medical Institute to award its successful medical students, said a press release.

Nirapad Sarak Chai Chairman Ilias Kanchan was the chief guest at the programme, addressed, among others, by the institute's chairman Ziaul Haque, Bangladesh Diploma Medical Association (BDMA) president Dr Md Shamsul Huda and its secretary general Dr Md Sirajul Islam.

"Annual financial loss of the deaths, resulting from the human-created menace, amounts to about Tk 150 billion or nearly 2.0 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP) in the country," said Mr Kanchan, also a film star.

Each year, he said, on an average around 10 thousand people are to pass away due to the tragic road crashes across the country, he added.

He also called upon the medial students to provide quick and quality treatment to the people, injured by the road accidents, helping them to get back to the normal life and keep on their contribution to the economy.
