The Association of Private Universities of Bangladesh (APUB) has asked the government to review the proposed 'Private University Ordinance 2007' 'as it will breach the autonomy of the private universities.
Members of the association at a view-exchanging meeting at national press club said the basic foundation of private universities would be changed if the proposed ordinance is implemented.
They also said the authority to run the institutions will move to the hands of the government, University Grants Commission (UGC) and accreditation council which is contrary to the Private University Act 1992.
"We reject the proposed ordinance and make a humble plea to the government to rescind it for the greater interest of higher education", APUB vice-president Abul Kashem Haider said.
Chairman of board of governors of Independent University Touhid Samad said the government could take legal action if any university is in default but it shouldn't bring the private universities under full control of UGC and accreditation council.
