Principal Staff Officer (PSO) of the Armed Forces Division (AFD) Lt Gen Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq took over as Army Chief on Thursday morning, report agencies.
Lt Gen Belal replaced Gen Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan who handed over the charge to him at a function at the Army Headquarters.
Earlier on June 10, the government appointed Lt Gen Belal as the new Army chief.
Meanwhile, Terming Bangladesh Army the pride of all countrymen, Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina hoped that Bangladesh Army would move forward by upholding the spirit of the War of Liberation.
"We are a victorious nation in our great War of Liberation and Bangladesh Army was established during the War of Liberation. I hope that Bangladesh Army would move ahead by upholding the spirit of the War of Liberation," the PM made the comments while congratulating the new Chief of Army Staff Abu Belal Mohammad Shafiul Huq after the rank badge-adorning function held at the Prime Minister's official residence at Ganobhaban in the city on Thursday.
In presence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral M Farid Habib and Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Abu Esrar adorned the new Army Chief with the rank badge of General.
The PM said Bangladesh armed forces have been playing a unique role in facing different natural disasters and providing human assistance side by side safeguarding country's independence and sovereignty.
Sheikh Hasina, also in charge of the Ministry of Defence, said her government has been working with utmost sincerity to build the armed forces as modern, time-befitting and international standard professional forces.
"Our stride for further development of the armed forces would continue in future," she said.
The newly-appointed Army Chief said Bangladesh Army would continue to work by keeping intact the trust in the government and constitution as per the guidelines of the Prime Minister. PM's Security Affairs Adviser Major General (Retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique, Principal Secretary Md Abul Kalam Azad, PMO Secretary Suraiya Begum and PM's Military Secretary Major General Mia Mohammad Zainul Abedin, Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim and Special Assistant Mahbubul Hoque Shakil and senior military officials were present on the occasion.
