Green activists at a discussion observed on Monday that the government, food producers and consumers should develop awareness to ensure safe and healthy food for all, reports UNB.
They came up with the observation at a seminar on "Civil Society's Role to Ensure Safe and Healthy Food," organised by Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA), at Dhaka Reporters' Unity in the city marking the World Consumer Rights Day.
Speaking at the programme as the chief guest, noted chemist Jahedur Rahman said the citizens should not rely only on the government or authorities concerned to get nutritious and balanced food, rather they should be aware and responsible first, to this end.
Mr Jahed, also the member secretary of BAPA'S Safe Food-Beverage and Consumer Rights Programme, said the country's people should change their mentality to ensure safe food from field to table.
Farmers should be provided with necessary training on safe farming so that they could know about the safe use of fertiliser and pesticides, he added.
The BAPA leader also observed that the school-going students and their parents must be more conscious about unhygienic street foods while school authorities should take initiatives to stop the sale of unsafe food around their institutions.
