Aziz Mohammad Bhai, 2 others get life term

A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced three people, including businessman Aziz Mohammad Bhai, to life imprisonment in the sensational case filed over the murder of actor Sohel Chowdhury in 1998.

Two other convicts are owner of Trumps Club Afakul Islam alias Bunty Islam and Adnan Siddiqui. All the three convicts have been shown fugitives.

Judge of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-2 of Dhaka, Arunabh Chakrabarty, deliverd the verdict at 1:15 pm after completing the trial process.

The judge also fined them Tk 0.2 million each, in default of which they will have to serve six months more in jail.

The court also acquitted six accused--- Ashish Roy Chowdhury alias Bottle Chowdhury, Tariq Sayeed Mamun, Faruque Abbasi, Sanzidul Islam Emon, Selim Khan and Harun-Or-Rashid alias Leather Liton as allegations brought against them were not proven.

Assistant Public Prosecutor Sadia Afrin Shilpi represented the state in the case. Apart from this, Lawyer Shah Monjurul Hoque appeared for Ashis Roy Chowdhury, lawyers Faruq Ahmed and Abdul Baset Rakhi appeared for Sanzidul Islam Emon and lawyer Shahabuddin appeared for Faruque Abbasi.

State appointed lawyers appeared for the convicted accused.

The court on April 29 concluded the final argument and fixed May 9 for delivering its verdict in the case.

Assistant Public Prosecutor Sadia Afrin Shilpi said Aziz Mohammad Bhai and Bunty Islam are absconding from the beginning stage of the case. Adnan Siddiqui didn't appear in the court after he released on bail. Emon was produced in the court from jail during the pronouncement of the verdict. Besides, Ashis Roy who secured his bail also appeared in the court during the verdict.

Tariq Sayeed Mamun and Faruque Abbasi who also secured bail placed time prayer through their lawyers. The court acquitted them showing as fugitive. Selim Khan and Harun-Or-Rashid were also shown as fugitives.
