Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) has taken an annual development programme (ADP) project at a cost of Tk 100 million (10 crore) approved by the government aiming at detecting congenital hypothyroidism, which is a serious disease.

Under this project about 24,000 newborn babies were already brought to treatment.

Secretary, Ministry of Science, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) SM Wahid-uz-Zaman said this while speaking as the chief guest at the training course on 'Newborn Screening for Congenital Hypothyroidism' at the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Ultrasound (INMU) on BSMMU campus in the city Wednesday, said a press release.

Chaired by Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) Chairman Shafiqul Islam Bhuiyan, the function was attended, among others, by former adviser Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury as the special guest.

Congenital hypothyroidism can cause permanent retardation of a newborn baby. If detected in the early stage this disease can be fully cured, the science and ICT secretary said.
