FE Report
The Department of Fisheries (DoF) will impose a ban on catching 'hilsa' during the breeding season between October 15 and 24 at four coastal points stretching over an area of seven thousand kilometres.
The areas where fishing will be prohibited includes Shairkhali-Haitkandi point in the Mirersarai in North-East Chittagong, Northern Kutubdia-Gandamara point in Kutubdia of South-Eastern Coz's Bazar, Northern Tajmuddin-Western Sayed Awlia point in Bhola and Latachapalia point in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali.
Tens of thousands of hilsa annually migrate to these four coastal points to spawn during the period and the DoF launches campaign programmes every year to ensure safe breeding of hilsa, said a DoF official.
During the period, the fishermen will not be allowed to catch hilsa in the area. Anybody violating the restriction will face a six-month imprisonment and a fine of Tk 1000. The tenure of imprisonment and penalty will be double if the same person is found guilty of repeat offence.
Coastguard members will patrol the areas of the four points to make sure that nobody catches hilsa during the period, he added.
"We'll motivate the fishermen not to catch hilsa during the breeding season," said the DoF official.
