Bangla music legend Bashir Ahmed laid to rest

The glittering star of Bangla music, Bashir Ahmed, was laid to eternal rest at Eidgah Graveyard on the Tajmahal Road in the capital's Mohammadpur area at 2:30pm Sunday, reports BSS.

The popular singer was buried after his namaz-e-janaza at Chader Haat field of Mahammadpur after Zohr prayers, son-in-law of the singer Masud Iqbal told the news agency.

The Qulkhwani of Bashir Ahmed will be held at his residence (32/6, block F, Zohuri Moholla) in Mohammadpur after Asr prayers Tuesday. Family members have requested all relatives and well wishers of the singer to attend the Qulkhwani.

The celebrated singer died of cancer at his Mohammadpur residence in the city Saturday night at the age of 74.

Family sources said the physical condition of the ailing singer had been deteriorating for the last several days.

The noted singer was born at Khidirpur in Kolkata in 1939.  Bashir Ahmed migrated to Dhaka in the sixties. Earlier, he started his career as a playback singer in Urdu films.

Bashir, a student of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, was also a lyricist and music director.

He received many awards, including National Film Award and Ekushey Padak. His popular songs include Aamake Poratey Jodi, Jare Jabi Jodi Ja, Anek Sadher Moyna Amar, Chokh Ferano Jaigo, etc.
