Bangladesh candidate to the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Monsur Ahmed Choudhuri has been elected with the highest number of votes for a four-year term, reports UNB.
A number of 23 candidates contested the poll for 12 seats.
All 41 State partiers to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities took part in the voting held Monday in New York.
Bangladesh secured 27, the highest number, immediately followed by Qatar with 26.
Foreign Adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury has sent a message of congratulations to the winner.
The Foreign Adviser said the victory, with the highest number of votes, marks yet another acknowledgement by the international community of Bangladesh's active role on critical global social issues.
"We had campaigned hard for it at the UN, and I am very pleased with the outcome. I am sure Monsur Ahmed Choudhuri will do a splendid job", he added.
