Bangladesh facing diarrhoea successfully: UNICEF

UNICEF country representative in Bangladesh Louis George Arsenault Wednesday appreciated the initiatives taken by the caretaker government to face the current diarrhoea situation, reports BSS.
"Bangladesh is successfully facing the present diarrhoea situation during this time of natural calamity," he expressed the opinion when he called on Adviser for Health and Family Welfare ASM Matiur Rahman at his office in the city.
Arsenault also apprised the adviser about emergency initiatives taken by his agency for combating flood situation.
He said though a huge number of people contracted diarrhoeal diseases but because of the collective efforts and emergency measures death toll was very low. The headquarters of UNICEF wanted to know how Bangladesh succeeded in handling this situation, the UNICEF representative said.
The health adviser lauded the continuous support of UNICEF for mitigation of different problems of Bangladesh including health, nutrition and safe environment.
He said the UNICEF has distributed high protein biscuits among 85,000 flood-affected families, helped 23,000 families to reconstruct homes, supplied essential drugs to 38 districts and extended cooperation to ensure safe water in 45 districts.
Matiur appreciated UNICEF role in Bangladesh, especially at the time of natural disasters. He also expressed the hope that the UN body would expand its services to more areas.
Additional Secretary of Health Ministry Jamil Osman and Joint Secretary Abdul Quddus were present.
