Bangladesh Police and Korea National Police on Thursday jointly organised a seminar on cyber security in order to enhance the capacity of local law enforcers.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in collaboration with Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), KOICA Bangladesh Alumni Association (KBAA), jointly organised the event at the CID headquarters in the city.

Titled 'Enhancing cyber security for digital Bangladesh', the seminar was addressed by Additional Inspector General of CID Md Shafiqul Islam, Country Director of KOICA Bangladesh Joe Hyun-Gue, Chief Inspector of Korea National Police Lee Woo Chae, and Adviser of KAAB Ataul Haq, among others.

In recent times, new communication system and digital technology have made massive changes in our daily life. Cybercrime has been one of the fastest growing areas of crime with the rise of internet usage in Bangladesh, speakers observed at the seminar.

Besides, incidents including central and private bank hacking, cyber-financial frauds, cyber money-laundering are few of the most common cyber related crimes that are accelerating in the country leading to cybercrimes being reported every day.

In this backdrop, KOICA in cooperation with Bangladesh Police, has been supporting Bangladesh Police and CID through its bilateral projects and fellowship programmes to develop capacity building plan for cybercrime investigation, and creating strategic mechanisms.

Moreover, it attempts to strengthen practical improvement initiatives and international cooperative strategies against specific cybercrimes.

Approximately, 50 officials from Bangladesh Police have received hands-on training through various practices in practical investigation together with in-depth theoretical knowledge from Korean National Police University in Korea.

Lee Woo Chae covered a wide range of topics in the seminar, such as, policies of cybercrime investigation, responsiveness for conventional crimes and strengthening future cooperation in cybercrime investigation between Bangladesh and Korea.

He further highlighted the urgency to address the need for factional online cybercrime reporting system, tactical tools for cybercrime intelligence and enhanced cyber security planning to strengthen practical strategies related to cybercrimes.
