Syeda Iqbal Mand Banu, mother-in-law of BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman, would submit her wealth statements to the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) if given 'enough time', her lawyer and BNP central leader Barrister Nasiruddin Asim said Sunday, reports bdnews24.com.
Asim said that Banu has been in London since last July for medical treatment.
Banu's son-in-law, Tarique, accused in several cases, has been staying in London for over five years. Her daughter Zobaida Rahman is also there.
Asim said at a press conference held at the Supreme Court that Banu had sought time from the anti-graft watchdog. "But the ACC filed the case ignoring her appeal."
He said Banu had no problem in submitting the statement.
The ACC had served Banu a notice on Jan 25, 2012, seeking her wealth details.
But she acquired a stay order from the High Court on the request. Later, however, the commission obtained a Supreme Court order on September 26 overturning the High Court stay.
Asim told the press, "Iqbal Mand Banu inherited all her wealth. She didn't acquire any. She spent money from her income for the welfare of street children."
"She (Banu) is a writer, pianist and artist. She also got the 'Swadhinata Padak' in 1995. She's a senior citizen. She should not be harassed by being denied the time needed to submit the statement."
