Employees of Bangladesh Association of Pourashava (municipality) Service (BAPS) postponed their work abstention programme on Wednesday following assurance by the government to fulfil their demands.

"The government accepted our demands. You will get salaries and other benefits from state exchequer within the next two months," Mayor of Gopalganj municipality Liaqat Hossain announced the government decision to the employees following a fruitful discussion earlier with the high- ups of the government.

Earlier, around 15,000 employees of country's 327 municipalities went on work abstention on March 10 last to realise their demands including retirement benefits and others.

They have been passing their days in hardships as they are not getting their salaries regularly.

Many of them did not get their salaries between two (2) and 60 months.

"We are grateful to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for accepting our demands. We will work on Saturdays to offset the losses incurred due to our five -day work abstention," president of BAPS Abdul Alim Mollah said.

He, however, warned that they will go for tougher movement if their demands are not met.
