CHITTAGONG, Sept 21: One barge was detained and fined taka 0.2 million today for transporting excess CR Coil and breaking the Kalarpol Baily bridge. Chittagong Port (CP) magistrate Munir Chowdhury penalised the barge. The detained barge is lying with S Alam Ghat, sources said.
According to the investigation, the CP magistrate had the apprehension just half an hour before the accident that the same barge may cause such an accident because the Barge Sunlight, while proceeding towards Shikalbaha canal, was overloaded with CR coils from jetty no 1 of CP.
As the barge was overloaded with 1700 tonnes of CR coil it could not keep control while approaching Kalarpol area and it caused the Kalarpol baily bridge to collapse.
