Battle for admission to city schools in the offing

November 01, 2009 00:00:00

Reputed schools in the city have begun the admission process for academic year 2010 as the Education Ministry asked all secondary schools and madrasas to begin their classes on the first office day of the academic year, reports BSS.
"Secondary educational institutions usually fail to start classes on time, losing much of their academic time. So, we have asked them to start classes on the first office day of the academic year," a high official of the ministry told the news agency.
The school authorities will have to complete admission, final examinations and publication of results by the end of every year. So, they have to start classes for the next academic session on the first day.
Usually, all the 317 government secondary schools across the country hold admission tests in the first half of January every year. As a result, the classes start in the first week of February. But this time the tests for the 2010 academic session will be completed by December 31.
School-going children and their guardians have been taking preparations for the admission tests and busy with collecting admission forms for the next academic session.
Some school authorities said that the guardians had been thronging their premises to collect admission forms. They said usually one admission seeker get admission out of every four students.
An official of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education told that the schedule of the admission for 24 government schools would be announced after a meeting to be held within a short period. More than 100,000 new students enrolled their names in the city's schools every year, according to the estimate of the directorate.
Besides about 400 government and non-government high schools, there are about 5,000 English medium schools, and Bengali and English medium kindergartens in the capital. But, only a few of them maintain an acceptable standard of education or have good teachers, guardians complained.
The education directorate officials said they are aware of the situation.
