BCL foils demo for reopening DU halls

DU CORRESPONDENT | June 07, 2021 00:00:00

While some students of Dhaka University (DU) were preparing on Sunday to hold their scheduled demonstration for reopening halls, some leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) have foiled it by holding an instant rally at the same places through a fearful showdown.

The incident took place at the base of Raju Sculpture of the campus at around 11am.

Asif Mahmud, a student of Linguist Department and co-ordinator of the reopening hall movement, said, "This was our scheduled programme and we requested them to let us hold the protest rally, but they didn't give us any chance to stand there. They held their instant programme for foiling our demonstration."

"They (BCL) also created a panic with bike showdown and we left the place," he added

Some leaders and activists of BCL stood there with a banner of 'Students of DU and other institutions' for holding a student rally demanding drug, terrorist and fundamentalism free campus.

BCL DU unit organising secretary Sheikh Tunan, mass communication secretary Sakib Al Hasan led the programme there.

They said they took permission from the university authorities and there is no need to make announcement before holding any programme on the campus.

On Thursday, Asif Mahmud, on behalf of the students for reopening hall movement, proposed the authorities take exams on schedule - postponed exams from June 15 and final exams from July 01 managing partial accommodation in the halls.

He also proposed the authorities to reopen halls step by step according to the students' exam schedule.

Review class must be ensured before exams via online or offline of completed syllabus and vaccination process should be run beside these, he added.

He also requested to form a sub- committee with the specialist teachers for maintaining the health guidelines after reopening it.
