BD sees 621 road accidents in Jan, 608 people killed

Some 621 road accidents killed 608 persons and injured over 1,100 in January across the country. Of them, 264 were killed in 271 motorcycle crashes, nearly 43 per cent of the total mishaps.

In addition, four waterways accidents killed six people, and 22 railway accidents killed 26 in the first month of the calendar year 2025.

The Road Safety Foundation (RSF), a rights body, revealed the figures on Tuesday through a report. The RSF prepared it based on the information of nine national dailies, seven online news portals, various electronic media, and its own data.

Accidents linked to motorcycle killed the highest number of 264 people, followed by 28 people killed in bus accidents, 34 in truck-covered van, pickup and tractor accidents, and 19 in private car, microbus and ambulances crashes.

Besides, 90 people were killed in accidents related with three-wheelers (easybike, CNG, auto-rickshaw, leguna), and 18 in accidents related with locally-made vehicles ('nosimon', 'tomtom', etc).

The RSF analysis also revealed that 214 accidents took place on national highways, 265 on regional roads, 96 on rural roads, and 42 on city streets.

The highest number of accidents, 258, occurred due to losing control over vehicles by drivers, 133 due to head-on collision, and 141 due to being run over by car.

A total of 971 vehicles were involved in the accidents, including 142 buses, 191 trucks, 24 covered vans, 26 pickups, 12 tractors, 18 trolleys, and six lorries and drum trucks, among others. Almost one-third of the mishaps took place in morning.

Dhaka division logged the highest number of 172 accidents, killing 161 persons. In contrast, Barishal division witnessed the lowest number of 30 deaths in 31 accidents. As a single district, Dhaka registered 42 accidents that killed 37 people.
