Bangladesh taka (BDT) has appreciated marginally by 0.17 per cent against the US dollar in the last two weeks due to increased inflow of foreign exchange ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha festival.
The US dollar was quoted at Tk 69.03 -Tk 69.05 in the inter-bank foreign exchange market Wednesday against Tk 69.15 in the two weeks back, according to the central bank statistics.
"The local currency has appreciated slightly against the US dollar due mainly to an increase the flow of inward remittances ahead of the Eid festival," a senior official of the Bangladesh Bank (BB) told the FE.
The BB officials expected that the flow of inward remittance would cross US$950 million by the end of this month against $900 million of the previous month.
The BB official also said the central bank is watching the country's inter-bank foreign exchange market closely aiming at keeping the market stable. "We continue intervention in the market through purchasing the US currency from the banks directly to minimise the mismatch between demand and supply of the greenback," he added.
