Tomorrow (Saturday) is the 15th death anniversary of Begum Fawzia Samad, wife of Late M. A. Samad, the founder of Bangladesh General Insurance Company, according to a press release.
She was the founder and editor of 'Minar', the first Bangla children's magazine - published in 1949.
She opened her Dhanmondi home in April 1971 to receive the first cache of arms and to shelter freedom fighters.
As the longest-serving president of the Dhaka Ladies Club (1973-2011), she established several humanitarian initiatives, including free schools.
Fowzia Samad was born on February 28, 1929 in Assam. Her ancestral home was in Balaganj of Sylhet. She passed away on April 25, 2011. She was the mother of Towhid Samad, chairman of BGIC, Fancy Samad, Tamju Samad and Sabrina Samad.
