The 189th birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing, was observed as the International Nurses Day (IND) in the Islamia Eye Hospital in the city and elsewhere in the country Tuesday.
The nurses of the hospital took a fresh oath to serve humanity with a missionary zeal on the day.
The day is celebrated around the world on May 12 since 1965 to mark the birthday of Florence Nightingale and to remember all the valuable contributions she made to the society. She was born in 1820.
Some 450 nurses of the hospital organised a colourful programme at the hospital's auditorium to mark the day.
Mirza Ali Behrouze Ispahani, Chairman of the management committee of Islamia Eye Hospital, attended the function as chief guest with the hospital's acting director general Prof ASM Kamal Uddin in the chair.
The chief guest hoped that the life, work and ideas of Florence Nightingale, would further motivate the nurses to serve the ailing humanity with more empathy.
He urged all members of the nursing community to come forward with all potentials to lead the Nightingale's spirit and prove to public that Bangladeshi nurses are good, competent, devoted and committed as their counterparts in other countries.
Adviser of the hospital's management committee Mrs Zahida Ispahani also attended the function and cut a huge cake on the occasion.
In her short speech, she urged the nurses of the hospital to provide healthcare services with honesty and sincerity, so that the patients can get better treatment. She also termed the nurses as the heart of any medical institution.
Dr Majid Khan, director medical services, Dr Nazmul Hoque Robi, deputy director (training), among others, attended the programme.
