BARISAL, June 2 (UNB): Barisal Fish Market of Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) has started functioning after 21 years of its establishment.

The market went into operation Friday following a tripartite meeting between the district administration, BFDC and fish merchants on May 15.

BFDC established the modern fish market at a suitable place on the bank of Kirtonkhola River in 1986 with financial assistance of Tk 60 million from the Danish Government.

The market, on 8,987 square feet area, has two ice factories, a cold storage and a power supply plant.

But the BFDC fish market could not begin operation soon after its establishment, as the fish traders were reluctant to start business there apparently to avoid government dues and taxes.

Instead, the local fish merchants, with the help of a section of political leaders, occupied BIWTA land on Port Road in the city and illegally set up another fish market leaving the BFDC market inoperative.

Although the BFDC fish market opened Friday, the fish traders did not vacate the illegally occupied BIWTA land.
