Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) demolished on Monday a total of 55 structures built illegally on the banks of the River Turag and Balu in the capital.
The demolished structures include six one- storey buildings, three two- storey buildings, two three- storey buildings, three semi-pucca buildings, 12 boundary walls and 29 tin-shed houses.
Besides, it has also dismantled four sand trading centres and recovered one acre of land.
The authority also realised Tk 50,000 as fine during its drive from Rashid Auto Bricks to Ishapura Bazar under Maoshaid mouza of Uttar Khan police station in Dhaka.
BIWTA has launched the drive to reclaim the river's land from illegal occupation of grabbers.
It has also taken a Tk 8.48 billion project to build 19 jetties in different areas including Aminbazar, Gabtoli, Kanchpur, Tanbazar, Machuwabazar and Khanpur.
It will construct a 50-kilometre walkway, plant saplings along the path and set up three eco-parks at Shinnirtek, Tongi and Ashulia under the project.
