Professor Dr A B M Obaidul Islam, Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the Bangladesh Open University (BOU), returned home on Sunday after attending the ACU Council Meeting and Congress, organised by the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and the University of Nairobi in Kenya.
He joined the conference in Nairobi on November 25-29 as a member of the ACU Council, attended the ACU Council Board Meeting, and presented BOU's ongoing activities at the Congress - highlighting technology-based education expansion, advancement of open and distance learning, and implementation of employment-oriented education.
Representatives from over 400 universities of the Commonwealth countries participated in the congress.
Citing the ACU research, the BOU VC mentioned that 1.0 per cent increase in higher education enrolment could raise the GDP of the Commonwealth countries by up to 28 billion USD by 2029. His proposed strategies included public-private partnerships (PPP), performance-based financing, alumni and philanthropic fund development, and digital transformation.
