Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on Friday expressed its grave concern over the brutal killing of journalist Golam Rabbani.
Jamalpur district correspondent of Banglanews24.com and Bakshiganj upazila correspondent of Ekattor TV, Rabbani was assaulted by a group of miscreants in Jamalpur on Thursday.
He died at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital at noon on the day while undergoing treatment there.
Condemning the killing of Golam Rabbani, the TIB also called for bringing the real culprits to justice immediately.
The organisation also urged the government to show an instance of its willingness to ensure protection of journalists by giving exemplary punishment to those directly or indirectly involved in the killing.
Incessant attacks, prosecutions, torture and killings of journalists for reporting the irregularities and corruption by influential people have become normal in the country while it has also been very common to enjoy impunity in favour of them, TIB said.
Citing media reports and journalist Rabbani's family sources, TIB in the statement said a public representative of Sadhurpara Union Parishad of Bakshiganj upazila in Jamalpur tried to harass him unjustly and unlawfully for publishing a news report. Later, his men brutally tortured and killed him (Rabbani) while he was returning home from his work.
Referring to some news items, TIB also said Golam Rabbani was too beaten up by a local Jubo League leader on April 11.
In the statement, TIB Executive Director (ED) Dr Iftekharuzzaman said attacks, torture, detention, disappearance and even killings of journalists by influential people and their accomplices following news reports about abuse of power, corruption, irregularities and injustice have become 'regular phenomena' in the country.
Miscreants and attackers have become 'desperate' nowadays due to the lack of success, indifference and in some cases tacit support from the administration and law enforcement authorities in preventing various attacks and torture against journalists in the country, he said.
Dr Zaman termed the situation as the latest example of the killing of journalist Golam Rabbani.
Urging the government to be respectful of the constitutional commitment to the freedom of the media, TIB also reiterated the government's commitment to the effective implementation of the eight recommendations related to the protection and security of journalists supported by the government during the third review of Bangladesh under the United Nations' Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in 2018.
Meanwhile, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) said on Friday that it will bring those to book who were involved in the murder of journalist Golam Rabbani.
Director (media) of RAB Khandaker Al Moin made the vow while replying to a query at a press briefing held at its Karwan Bazar office in the capital.
