Bangladesh Roads Transport Authority (BRTA) has started receiving large number of applications for driving licences ahead of its drive against plying of vehicles over 20 years old and driving with fake licences.
The BRTA launches the drive from July 15 to enforce Motor Vehicle Ordinance that bars plying of 20-year old buses, mini-buses and 25-year old trucks, vehicles without route permits and driving with fake licences on the city streets.
BRTA officials said they are now receiving on an average 1000 applications for driving licence every day against the normal trend of 500 licences.
"We can at best issue 700 licences a day as per the capacity of the machine," said a senior BRTA official.
The officials said to make the drive successful, the BRTA has also received necessary support from other agencies including Dhaka Metro-politan Police and District Administration. It has now 15 additional magistrates, they said adding, a 3-acre dumping ground has been prepared at Kanchpur.
A meeting on June 25 with communications minister Syed Abul Hossain in the chair decided to conduct the drive in the city four days in a week.
The drive was attended by all stakeholders including representatives from vehicles owners and workers associations.
