The press briefing convened by the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) has turned into a mess with journalists failing to figure out what the proceeding was all about, reports bdnews24.com.
The authority invited journalists for a press briefing on Saturday at 10am.
But when journalists turned up for the same in the due time, they saw the vice-chancellor Prof Pran Gopal Datta was briefing his hospital colleagues with the backcloth saying "press briefing".
A small room in the sixth floor was jam-packed with deans, professors, and nurses of the university hospital.
After 15 minutes, the Vice-Chancellor left ending the briefing leaving the journalists confused.
When a journalist asked a doctor when the press briefing would start, he replied this was the briefing. He pointed at the two television cameras in the crowd. This has surprised the journalists who were waiting outside for the briefing.
The university's public relation officer Prasanta Kumar Majumder had been inviting the journalists over phone for this briefing for the last four days. Even on Saturday morning before the scheduled event at 10am, he made calls.
When asked about the mess, he told journalists that: "VC Sir started the briefing on time".
He distributed press release without making any comments.
A professor said he had no idea of such "mismanagement".
"We thought journalists will sit behind the first two rows in the front. That's why we took seats in the front," the professor told bdnews24.com.
The briefing has been convened for the opening of a new OT (operation theatre) and ICU complex at the Bangladesh's lone medical university.
Journalists were also curious about the vice-chancellor's briefing as he would end his two successive tenures at the beginning of the next year.
There are speculations that he may get a post in the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's cabinet or in the advisory panel.
Prof Datta, a known ENT doctor, is also a personal physician of the prime minister.
The new ICU complex will accommodate 21 beds while the OT complex will house 24 OTs for 14 departments, according to the press release.
