Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) is preparing to establish a neurosurgery skill training centre soon to help young doctors acquire more skills, its top official said.

BSMMU Vice Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Sharfuddin Ahmed also said the institution has also taken necessary steps, including installation of modern equipment, to deliver neurosurgery treatments.

He said these while speaking as the chief guest of an international conference on neurological surgery at a city hotel on Saturday. It was jointly organised by the Asian Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the Bangladesh Society of Neurosurgeons (BSNS), a statement said.

In his speech, the VC also said the BSMMU physicians have already done liver transplant and cadaveric transplant successfully.

"We are focusing on training young doctors to make them proficient in these areas. Such an international conference will play an effective role in developing skills of the young doctors," he added.

BSNS President Professor Mohammad Hossain said the chief objective of this conference - which is the first of its kind - is to make the young neurosurgeons competent in neurosurgical treatment.

Around 200 neurosurgeons from home and abroad, including the USA, Japan, India, Taiwan and Indonesia, joined the conference - also held on virtual platform, the statement added.
