BTRC's Digital Security Cell renamed Digital and Cyber Safety Directorate

FE REPORT | February 04, 2025 00:00:00

The Digital Security Cell of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has been renamed Digital and Cyber Safety Directorate.

According to the regulatory body, the new name better reflects the unit's role in enhancing internet safety and strengthening cybersecurity. While its core responsibilities remain unchanged, its scope has expanded to address the growing challenges of digital security.

Formed in 2021, the Digital Security Cell operated in coordination with intelligence agencies, law enforcement bodies-including the armed forces and police-as well as 19 other government ministries and agencies. Its primary function is to monitor and remove objectionable contents from social media and online platforms.

On average, the unit submitted around 130 content removal requests to social media platforms every day. With the rising number of users across social media, digital domains, apps, and OTT platforms, cyber-related crimes and abuse have also been on the rise.

As a result, BTRC has been receiving a growing volume of content moderation requests from law enforcement and government agencies, requiring timely action with necessary approvals. To meet these demands, the unit's manpower has also been expanded.
